Zhang Daning: Supporting Preservation, Innovation, and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Date: 2019-03-13
I was greatly inspired by the government work report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang, in which he devoted much space to the topic of health care. He noted China would support the preservation, innovation, and development of traditional Chinese medicine. These three verbs are quite well chosen. Preservation is about inheriting the past from the older generations and spreading the knowledge to the younger generations. As a veteran doctor in this field, my most important job is to share without reservation my clinical knowledge with the young doctors. I have set up over two dozens of work stations in triple-A hospitals across the country, where more than 100 doctors are pursuing their studies, and have created a committee devoted to preservation. My effort has produced some results, but I will strive even harder this year.

After preservation, there is innovation and development. Traditional Chinese medicine is a discipline with a long history, and yet it has never stopped innovating and progressing. This was true in ancient times, and remain true today with the strong support of the Communist Party of China and the government. President Xi Jinping pledged in his report to the 19th National Congress of the CPC to support both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine and ensure the preservation and development of traditional Chinese medicine. This is the most important piece of guidance for the development of our cause. I am confident that my colleagues across China will make greater efforts under the leadership of the CPC with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core to preserve, innovate, and develop our discipline and help the people prevent and treat diseases and develop a healthier lifestyle.
