Global Climate Cooperation and Action COSC Side Event at COP24

On 10 December 2018, COSC and the World Resources Institute (WRI) jointly held a side event on global climate cooperation and action on the margins of the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) in Katowice, Poland. Speakers at the event included experts from the COSC, the WRI, China’s National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, Tsinghua University, Harvard University, George Mason University, and institutions based in California and Washington.

In his speech, Zhao Bing, Vice Chairman of the COSC, underlined China’s commitment to innovative, coordinated, green, open, and shared development. To make development green, low-carbon, and sustainable, China makes tremendous efforts to implement a national strategy against climate change, strengthen global climate governance, carry out South-South cooperation on climate change, and promote low-carbon development and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, all for a better environment on the planet. He stated China’s readiness to work with various parties to realize green, low-carbon development around the world to make our planet clean and beautiful.

Manish Bapna, Executive Vice President of the WRI, shared with the audience US measures at various levels to counter climate change and research findings. Counsellor Liu Yanhua talked about China’s endeavor to build a good ecological environment and the content and impact of its low-carbon actions. Andrew Light, a leading senior fellow at WRI and professor at George Mason, made a speech entitled US Action on Climate Change and Clean Energy.

COSC Research Fellow He Jiankun moderating a panel discussion

He Jiankun, COSC research fellow and Deputy Director of the National Expert Committee on Climate Change, made a keynote speech entitled China’s Climate Change Policies and Actions and moderated a panel discussion of eight Chinese and US experts who exchanged views on the policies and developments in China and the US on energy revolution and climate change, the carbon market, regional cooperation, and green finance. It was an excellent opportunity for the two countries to better understand each other in terms of energy and climate change.

Wang Jing, Deputy Director-General of the International Exchanges and Cooperation Department of the COSC, chaired the event. Delegates and journalists from a number of countries participating in COP24 joined the event and interacted with Chinese and US experts.

This is the fifth time COSC takes part in the Conference of the Parties and holds a successful side event. The first four took place in Durban, Doha, Morocco, and Bonn.
