COSC and Kissinger Institute Organized “International Symposium on China-US Relations and Global Governance”

Date: 2017-12-22
On December 4, COSC and the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars co-organized “International Symposium on China-US Relations and Global Governance” in Beijing. COSC Chairman Wang Zhongwei and US Ambassador to China Terry Branstad attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Counsellors of the State Coucil Shi Yinhong and Li Yuguang, COSC Research Fellow Zhang Xinsheng, Former Chinese Ambassador to the UK Ma Zhengang, Former Chinese Ambassador to India Sun Yuxi, Former US Ambassador to China Stapleton Roy, Former Indian Ambassador to China Nirupama Rao, and Director General Sun Weijia of the COSC Department of International Exchanges and Cooperation attended the meeting.

COSC Chairman Wang Zhongwei said in his address that China-US relations cover a broad range of areas such as economy, trade, investment and international economic cooperation. Mutual benefit is the shared pursuit of the two sides. As the two largest economies and leaders of global growth, China and the US shoulder important responsibilities for world peace, stability, development and prosperity. A stable and growing China-US relationship not only serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also meets the expectations of countries in the region and the international community at large. This symposium, said Mr. Wang, is of particular importance as it takes place after the conclusion of the 19th Party congress and the successful visit of President Trump to China.

While addressing the meeting, Ambassador Branstad said that the US-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. A sound US-China relationship benefits the whole world. Over the past 30-plus years, China has made outstanding economic achievements and US-China trade has increased remarkably. Under new circumstances, the US and China continue to grow their relations in a constructive and open way. Concerted efforts of the two countries on global and regional issues are critical.

Chinese and American experts had in-depth discussions on the outcome of the 19th Party congress, China-US relations, the Asia-Pacific policies of China and the US, China-US-India relations, China-US-Russia relations, as well as the positions of China and the US on global governance topics.
