COSC Held a Side Event during the 23rd UN Climate Change Conference

On November 8, 2017, COSC and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) co-organized a side event “Ecological Civilization: the Conceptual Framework for Low-carbon and Sustainable Development” during COP23 in Bonn, Germany. Chinese and international experts from COSC, CASS, Tsinghua University and the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute spoke at the event.

Counsellor of the State Council Zhang Hongtao gave a briefing on the background and significance of China’s energy revolution and outlined its measures and achievements in hydro, wind, solar, nuclear, natural gas, shale gas, and gas hydrate.

Counsellor of the State Council Zhang Yuanfang made a presentation on low-carbon transport in China, which includes development goals, status quo and policies as well as the prospects on low-carbon transport.

Pan Jiahua, Director of the Institute for Urban Environmental Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences made a keynote speech “Ecological Civilization: A New Paradigm for Achieving the SDGs and the Goals of the Paris Agreement”. Brad Page, CEO of Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, Zhou Jian, Professor of Tsinghua University, Wang Mou, Secretary General of the Research Center for Sustainable Development of CASS also made speeches on eco-civilization and sustainable development and on goals, measures, achievements and prospects of China’s economic and low-carbon transition. Peter Govindasamy, Director of International Trade of the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Tom Baxter, International Communication Officer of Green Peace, commented on the speeches.
 
Director General Xu Xiaowei and Deputy Director General Wang Jing of COSC as well as participants and journalists from a number of countries also attended the meeting.

This is the fourth time that COSC has attended the UN Climate Change Conference and hosted a side event after Durban, Doha and Morocco.
