COSC Held a Side Event during the 22nd UN Climate Change Conference

On November 14th, COSC and Tsinghua University co-organized the Seminar “Situation and Policies on Climate Response and Green and Low Carbon Economic Transition under the New Normal” at the China Pavilion of UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech, Morocco.

Vice Chairwoman Wang Hong delivered an opening address.

In her opening address, Vice Chairwoman Wang Hong said that climate change is a major challenge facing all countries. As the world’s largest developing country, China is committed to tackling climate change and has actively engaged in the global response to climate change under UNFCCC. China was among the first countries to ratify the Paris Agreement at the G20 Hangzhou Summit as a token of its responsibility and obligation as a big country. She said that as a major advisory body of the Chinese government, COSC has followed very closely the developments and trends in energy, environment and climate change. China is willing to have in-depth exchanges with experts and scholars of all countries on the platform of the UN Climate Change Conference and contribute wisdom to the global response to climate change.

Counsellor Zhang Hongtao and Xie Guangchang, former Vice President and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Zhou Dadi, former Deputy Director of the Energy Research Institute of NDRC, made keynote speeches on China’s energy situation under the new economic normal, modern energy system and low-carbon transition. Experts and scholars from Chinese and foreign research institutes including the Energy and Environment Economics Research Institute of Tsinghua University, China International Engineering Consulting Corporation, IDDRI of France as well as the World Resources Institute participated in the meeting and had discussions.

Chinese Ambassador to Morocco Sun Shuzhong and Deputy Director General Li Gao of the Climate Change Department of NDRC spoke at the event. Director General Sun Weijia of the Department of International Exchanges and Cooperation of COSC and Director General Li Junfeng of the NDRC Center for Climate Strategy chaired the event respectively. Counsellor Li Yuguang as well as delegates and journalists of several countries present at the conference also attended the event.

This is the third time that COSC had attended the UN Climate Change Conference and held a side event, after those in Durban and Doha.
