COSC and the Fundación Alternativas of Spain Co-organized the Seminar on the Belt and Road Initiative and China-Spain Cooperation

On November 16th, COSC and the Fundación Alternativas of Spain co-organized the Seminar on the Belt and Road Initiative and China-Spain Cooperation in Madrid. COSC Vice Chairwoman Wang Hong, Chinese Ambassador to Spain Lyu Fan, Mayor of Madrid Manuela Carmena, CEO for North America, Asia and Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain Fidel Sendagorta, Executive Vice-President of the Fundación Alternativas Nicolas Sartorius as well as nearly 100 representatives of Chinese and Spanish governments, companies, think tanks, academia and media were present.

Vice Chairwoman Wang Hong said that since China and Spain established diplomatic relations over 40 years ago, the friendly ties between the two countries have been deepened. As an important advisory body of the Chinese government, COSC has established cooperative relations with 50 think tanks in 30 countries. The Fundación Alternativas is an important partner of COSC in Europe. Since establishing cooperative relations six years ago, the two sides have held three seminars and carried out a full range of successful events. She expressed the hope to deepen exchanges and cooperation with the Fundación Alternativas in wider areas and in an innovative way, so as to make more intellectual contribution to deeper understanding of the two countries and stronger relations between the two countries.

Counsellors of the State Council Zhang Hongtao and Li Yuguang, Deputy Director General Huang Duan of the Development Research Center of Fujian Province and Deputy Director Xiang Junyong of the Industrial Research Department of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of Renmin University of China gave speeches on China’s ecological policies, China-Spain cultural exchange, Belt and Road Initiative as well as China-Latin America cooperation. Participants also had in-depth discussions on cooperation between China and Spain in culture, tourism, urban construction and environmental protection.

Chinese Ambassador Lyu Fan and Mayor of Madrid Manuela Carmena delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. Ambassador Lyu said that China’s Belt and Road Initiative brings enormous opportunities for Spain and other countries in the world. He expressed the hope that COSC and the Fundación Alternativas of Spain will deepen cooperation and provide more ideas and policy recommendations. Mayor Manuela Carmena said that Madrid is willing to be part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and make contribution to China-Spain cooperation and friendship.

On the margins of the seminar, Vice Chairwoman Wang had a meeting with Mr. Sartorius, Executive Vice-President of Fundación Alternativas. The two sides exchanged views on topics of shared interest as well as mechanisms and priorities for future cooperation. Director General Sun Weijia of the Department of International Exchanges and Cooperation of COSC attended the seminar and meeting.

After the seminar, Vice Chairwoman Wang made an investigation visit in Madrid on environmental protection and cultural innovation.
