The 10th China International Food Safety and Quality Conference and Expo was held in Shanghai. David Tharp, Chairman of the Conference and Executive Director of the International Association for Food Protection, Ge Zhirong, Counsellor of the State Council and the President of the China Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Association, and Academician Chen Junshi, Chief Advisor of the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, attended and spoke at the event.

Counsellor Ge reviewed the history and progress of the conference and stressed that food safety is a systemic project and calls for the concerted efforts of governments, businesses, science and technology community, consumers and all sectors of society. After more than 30 years of reform and opening up, China has put in place a fairly complete system of food industries. That said, we must be soberly aware that food safety is a global issue for years to come. Countries must strengthen exchanges and cooperation and improve international governance on food safety together.

The conference lasted for two days under the theme “improving food safety for global consumers”. There were 12 plenary sessions and about 80 thematic sessions, bringing together over 800 participants in the food industry from China and abroad, including those from regulatory authorities, international organizations, research institutions, universities and food companies. The annual International Food Safety and Quality Conference and Expo has become a well-known event for food safety worldwide.
