On 10 September 2016, Zhang Xinsheng, COSC Research Fellow, Secretary General of the Eco-Forum Global and former Vice Minister of Education, was re-elected by a large margin as President of the IUCN Council at the 6th World Conservation Congress in Hawaii, the United States.

The IUCN is the world’s largest and oldest global environmental protection organization, made up of more than 1,200 member organizations and over 15,000 experts from 185 countries. The World Conservation Congress is hosted by the IUCN. It convenes every four years, each session lasting 10 days. More than 11,000 delegates from across the world attended the recent session.

At the 5th World Conservation Congress in 2012, Mr. Zhang was elected as President of the IUCN Council. He was the first Chinese to be elected to such a position.
