Urban Development International Conference Held in Beijing

The Urban Development International Conference, co-hosted by the Center for International Strategic Studies of the Counsellors’ Office of the State Council and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, was held in Beijing on 15 April 2016. COSC Chairman Wang Zhongwei, RICS President-elect Amanda Clack and James Bryce, Minister-Counsellor of the UK Embassy in China attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

In his address, Chairman Wang said the Chinese government places great importance on the role of cities in promoting socio-economic development and improving people’s living standards. China is implementing the spirit of the Central Urban Work Conference and pursues people-oriented urbanization. He encouraged Chinese and foreign attendees to enhance practical cooperation in urbanization and urban development.

At the plenary session in the morning, Liu Yanhua, Counsellor and former Vice Minister of Science and Technology, Qiu Baoxing, Counsellor and former Vice Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, RICS President elect Amanda Clack, Li Tie, Director General of China Center for Urban Development of the National Development and Reform Commission and Development and Yang Wei, Co-chair of the China-UK Eco-cities and Green Building Group, made keynote speeches on sustainable urban development and planning of small-and-medium-sized cities.

In the afternoon, there were three sessions: sustainable development, success cities and urban characteristics shaping. Former Counsellor Niu Wenyuan and Director and Chief Scientist of the Sustainable Development Strategy Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Yuping, Counsellor and former Deputy Secretary General of the Beijing Municipal Government, and COSC Research Fellow Che Shujian spoke on behalf of COSC. Experts and member of the business community including BRE President Zhou Jiaming and Zhang Junjie, President of East China Architecture, Design and Research Institute also joined the discussion on relevant topics.

The Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS) was founded in March 2016 as policy research institution under COSC. Its main responsibilities are promote international exchanges and cooperation on major issues, provide a platform for public policy debate and advise the Chinese government on decision making. RICS was established in 1868 with its headquarters in London. It has nearly 200,000 members worldwide and is an authoritative agency on land, building, property and environment. The forum is the first joint international event between CISS and RICS.
