On 12 January, Xia Bin, Counsellor of the State Council and President of the Institute of State Economy of Nankai University, gave a lecture titled "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow of China's Economy". In this lecture hosted by the Institute of State Economy of Nankai University with the support of Dongli District of Tianjin, he analyzed the future development of China's economy in the context of coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

Based on his years of research, Mr. Xia put forth suggestions to tackle challenges in China's economy. He focused on the period between 2001 and 2011, the ten years of super prosperity, and analyzed the contribution of investment, export and consumption to GDP growth. The existing problems in China's economy, he believed, is a result of dropping growth speed that is attributed to falling exports after the economic crisis broke out in the US. China failed to make economic restructuring, as the economy was still in the middle of heated growth. Mr. Xia offered his views and proposed measures in response to issues related to investment, export and consumption. He also talked about the focus of the central government on supply-side reform, the rationale behind it and the priorities going forward.

Mr. Xia made positive comments on recent policies of the central government and elaborated how to prevent economic collapse, ease employment pressure for college graduates and adopt bold and positive fiscal policies in extraordinary times.
