Qian Yingyi’s Dialouge with Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Craig Blankfein: Seeking the Secrets of the Chinese Economy in the Wave of Entrepreneurship and Innovation

According to a report carried by xinhuanet in Beijing on 13 June, Qian Yingyi, Counsellor of the State Council and Dean of the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (SEM) had a dialogue with visiting Lloyd Craig BlankfeinChairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs on topics of economic outlooks of China and the United States and entrepreneurial spirit on 10 June. They also had an exchange of views with representatives from the government, businesses, think tanks, the Goldman Sachs Women Entrepreneurship Program, Tsinghua University Alumni and the media. Topics under discussion included opportunities and challenges of China’s reform, the impact of technological progress, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit on the economy and society, the Belt and Road Initiative and the potential driving force of the China-US Bilateral Investment Treaty for economic development. The Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management has been one of the most important partners in Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Entrepreneurship Program. The model effect of this program was also among the subjects of discussion.
Dean Qian Yingyi said that innovation and entrepreneurship education and research figures prominently in the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management, which particularly incorporates entrepreneurship into administration education. As early as 2000, the school launched a National Entrepreneurship Research Center. In 2013, the Department of Technology, Economy and Management and the Department of Enterprise Strategy and Policy were merged into the Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy, the first such mergence ever among business schools in Chinese universities. In the same year, the SEM and 14 colleges and departments of Tsinghua University co-launched the Tsinghua x-lab, thus establishing a new type of university-oriented, cross-disciplinary education platform for fostering creativity and innovation and initiating a completely new educational model for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. More importantly, the 10,000 Women Entrepreneurship Program between the SEM and Goldman Sachs is a useful exploratory effort to train women’s entrepreneurial and administrative capability.
     Lloyd Craig Blankfein said that China’s economy is growing stronger, with broad investment prospects. Goldman Sachs will continue its engagement in China. He believes that now is the perfect time for entrepreneurship in China, which means that the internet, shops, servers and capital can all be fully used and with good ideas, you will enjoy unlimited scope for development.
      In addition, Lloyd Craig Blankfein also highly recognized the positive results in the close cooperation between SEM and Goldman Sachs on the Women Entrepreneurship Program. According to reports, Dean Qian Yingyi also engaged in a summit dialogue with Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook and Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. And the visit of Lloyd Craig Blankfein, Chairman of Goldman Sachs to Tsinghua University attracted much attention from various sectors.
