The Symposium on Air Quality Control was held in Beijing

On 23 June 2015, the Symposium on Air Quality Control co-organized by the COSC, the Royal Academy of Engineering of the UK and the British Embassy in China was held in Beijing.

Fang Ning, Vice Chairman of the COSC, Prof. John Loughhead, Chief Scientific Advisor of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and Barbara Woodward, British Ambassador to China attended the meeting and addressed the opening ceremony. 







In his opening remarks, Vice Chairman Fang Ning said that air pollution is a common challenge to human society in the course of modernization and the COSC attaches great importance to the research on air pollution control and expressed hope that the symposium will provide useful input to air pollution control.

At the symposium, the participating Chinese and UK experts had in-depth and productive exchanges and discussions on four topics, i.e. Air Quality Control and International Energy Strategies & Policies, Technologies of Air Pollution Control, Effects of Air Pollution on Public Health and Tackling Measures, and Experience of Air Quality Control in Megacities.



As host of the Symposium, the COSC invited counsellors of the State Council Liu Yanhua, Shi Yinhong, Zhu Weijiu, Zheng Hu, Zhang Hongtao, Chen Quansheng, Deng Xiaohong and Wang Huiyao, Research Fellows of the COSC He Jiankun, Wu Yin, Xu Dingming, Qin Xiaoming, former Counsellor of the State Council Shi Dinghuan and representatives, experts and scholars from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the State Council Development Research Center and other relevant organizations to the symposium. Participants from the UK side included representatives, experts and scholars from the Department for Transport, the Met Office, King’s College of the University of London, the University of Leicester, the University of West England and the London Mayor’s Office.

In early 2014, the COSC and the UK Royal Academy of Engineering signed the MOU on cooperation in holding the symposium on air quality control and have since carried out many exchanges with the support and assistance of the British Embassy in China. As an important part of the tripartite cooperation program, this symposium represents a specific outcome of such cooperation.

Before the symposium started, Vice Chairman Fang Ning met with Ambassador Barbara Woodward, giving an introduction to the exchanges and cooperation between the COSC and the UK Royal Academy of Engineering.
