Date: 2014-12-18

On 18 December, the COSC, the CCICH and the Zhonghua Book Company jointly held a seminar on China’s regional culture in Beijing, which brought together experts and scholars from all over the country for discussions on the status and future of research on China’s regional cultures. The participants gave high appraisal to the Cultural Overview of China’s Regions published by the Zhonghua Book Company.

Yang Jing, Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, State Councilor and Secretary General of the State Council extended congratulations on the publication of the volumes, encouraging deepened research on regional cultures and new contributions to the socialist cultural prosperity of Chinese characteristics.

It took eight years for nearly 1,000 experts and scholars all over the country and editors from the Zhonghua Book Company to complete the Cultural Overview of China’s Regions, with the organization of the COSC and the CCICH. There is a dedicated volume to each province, autonomous region and municipality, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, totaling 34 volumes, each with approximately 500,000 characters amounting to 17 million characters in complete volumes. That is the first comprehensive region-specific cultural overview in China. It provides a summary of the development history and highlights of regional cultures tracing back to the cultural origin all the way to the 1911 Revolution. With the aim of producing long-lasting fine works with remarkable features as set by the leaders of the State Council, the editorial committee has adhered to strict academic standards, innovation and democracy throughout the editorial process, thus ensuring the editorial quality of the volumes.  Since last year, some of the volumes have been published, with workshops held in relevant localities. The volumes has been fully recognized by all sectors of society as being high-quality works on cultural history and creating new highs for regional cultural studies.

The compilation of the Cultural Overview of China’s Regions has also generated strong interest from various social sectors, experts and scholars in China’s regional cultural research. Seventeen prefecture-level cities in Shandong compiled their local cultural overviews. Fourteen prefecture-level cities in Liaoning launched similar efforts, with the publication of local cultural overviews of four cities. Fujian Province, Shenyang and Xi’an published their own local cultural overviews. The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has started work on a continued version of the Guangxi volume of the “Cultural Overview of China’s Regions”, with a focus on the local cultural development in the past century since the 1911 Revolution.
