Fan Di'an: Artists Need to Get Out of Their Own Circles

Source: GMW.cn Date: 2015-11-24
"Artists must not stay confined within their own circles and should instead reach out to society, connect with the people and keep abreast of the times," said Fan Di'an, President of the Central Academy of Fine Art in an interview with the Bureau of Culture and Art, www.wenming.cn and Guangming Online.
"The word 'circle' is often used to describe people in the field of culture and art. This, in a way, speaks to problems with the culture and art community. Some artists stay confined in a narrow horizon in terms of thinking and understanding. Hence the culture of 'circles'," told Mr. Fan. He admitted that there are specific areas of art. But art comes from life. Each product of artistic value must be appreciated by the people in the first place. Artists must think out of box, reach out to society and embrace the time.
Artists, said Mr. Fan, must think about how to strengthen the bond with the people and create works that are relevant to the time. This is a challenge confronting all artists.
